Did you know that Missouri is home to only one species of scorpion and that is the striped bark scorpion?!? ๐Ÿฆ‚๐Ÿฆ‚

The striped bark scorpions sting is venomous and can be very painful, but is almost never life threatening. They are pale yellowish brown usually with two dark stripes on its abdomen and can be found in dry, warm, rocky areas and sometimes can make their way into homes and buildings.

Did you know that crane flies or โ€œmosquito eatersโ€ do not actually eat mosquitos?

Crane flies are typically found in moist, vegetative areas so they can mate and lay their eggs. The adult stage of the crane fly do not actually eat anything at all. Their larvae, on the other hand, do and can reek havoc on yards, in large concentrations, by eating decomposing vegetation and plant roots.

Ants can be a big nuisance this time of year, especially the odorous house ants. ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿœ

Odorous house ants are about 1/8โ€-3/16โ€ in length and have dark brown bodies with one node on their flattened petiole (the piece connecting the thorax to the abdomen). They are typically found in kitchens and bathrooms around water areas. When crushed the emit a smell of rotten coconut, which is where they get their name from.

Bed bugs bugging you? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Bed bugs are reddish-brown to mahogany in color and adults are 1/5-1/4โ€ long and about 1/8โ€ wide. Eggs are white in color, elongated and about 0.04โ€ long.

Bed bugs live about 4-6 months under normal conditions, but can live up to a year without feeding if temperature is undesirable or bloodmeals are infrequent.

Females lay an average of 2 eggs per day and will lay around 200-500 eggs in her life time. Eggs hatch in 10 days at room temperature (around 75 degrees). With optimal conditions, the availability of blood meals and favorable temperatures, the life cycle time from egg to laying eggs is between 45-60 days.

Ticks can be a big problem this time of year.

Not only are they a nuisance, but they can be vectors for various conditions such as Lyme disease, Alfa-Gal Syndrome, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and even tick paralysis! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿฆ 

Since ticks cannot run, hop, fly or move quickly, they must climb onto something, such as high grass, weeds, fences or even buildings to wait for a suitable host to pass by. This is also known as โ€œquestingโ€.

Some spiders ๐Ÿ•ท๐Ÿ•ธ can be beneficial because they eat insects that can damage things like gardens and crops.

Yellow garden spiders, for instance, diet consists of aphids, grasshoppers, mosquitos, flies, wasps and other insects that may do damage to crops. Found throughout the US in gardens, fields, clearings and other sunny areas. Since they are a part of the orb weaver family, they spin circular webs ๐Ÿ•ธ strung from twigs, leaves, branches, a/c units, decks and homes. Average size of a female is 3/4โ€ณ to 1 1/8โ€ณ. Males are three times smaller.

While harmless to humans, orb weavers can be a nuisance, especially if you walk face first into their web!!๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ˜ต๐Ÿคฌ
