Here's some interesting trivia on one of my favorite sweet treats. Today is National Doughnut Day!

It is a day of appreciation of Salvation Army volunteers who distributed doughnuts to servicemen during the first world war.

Date: Celebrated on the first Friday in June and November 5
Why two National Doughnut days and which is the real one? Turns out they're both valid holidays honoring the sweet treat. While both are official National Donut Days, many people consider the June date to be the original.

In the Second World War, Red Cross Volunteers also distributed doughnuts, and it became routine to refer to the Red Cross girls as Doughnut Dollies.
