JUNE 19 — the oldest celebrated commemoration of the end to slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth marks the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to ensure all enslaved people would be freed. This was a full two and half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

This day is not just another "holiday" — we remember, honor, and stand with Black communities who have faced generational trauma at the hands of colonial America.

Juneteenth is also a reminder that it takes all of us — not just our policymakers — to ensure equity for all.

In child welfare, we can't simply rely on decision-makers to provide our kids and families with what they need. We must come together to provide the action, hope, and care we see lacking around us.

How will you stand with Black communities in child welfare?

"I've seen what it takes to get there."

NEW BLOG POST from CEO Ligia Cushman: https://wearefamiliesrising.org/reunification-month-what-reunification-taught-me-about-families/

Reunification can be a long process. It can mean hard work, accountability, and intense seasons of growth.

And it can mean new beginnings. Healing. Trust rebuilt. We celebrate the families who did the work and continue to do the work to reunify. We honor the children who waited, and the professionals who helped make healing possible.

From Ligia — Why do we celebrate Reunification Month? Reunification is certainly a nuanced topic. But we celebrate the parents who did the work, the kids who waited, and the professionals who helped families be able to heal together.

When safe, reunification is often the MOST important pathway to permanency for a child.

All children deserve loving homes. Kids and families who are part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community are worthy of respect, kindness, and dignity.

Together, let's create a child welfare system that bestows dignity on everyone, and let's love our LGBTQIA2S+ community every month of the year.

When Chase* was adopted, he heard everyone around him call his parents "heroes," but all he felt was insurmountable grief at losing his first family.

When Yolanda* made the decision to become a foster parent, she didn't know how lonely the journey would get, or that her family just wouldn't understand.

And when Silvia* became a social worker, she never thought she'd have kids sleeping on her office floor because they had nowhere else to go that night.

When you donate to Families Rising, you're helping real people with stories like these.

Consider what you might give to families in need today, and together we can build a better world for children everywhere.

❗ ADVOCACY ALERT ❗ Tell your Senators to become co-sponsors of the Promoting Strong Native Families and Children Act!

Introduced by Senators Lisa Murkowski and Catherine Cortez Masto on May 26, the Promoting Strong Native Families and Children Act (S. 4638) would:

1) expand Tribal access to federal human services funding by $94 million

2) ensure grant amounts better reflect the true costs of administration and community needs

3) strengthen collaboration among states and Tribes when Native children are placed in out-of-home care in state child welfare systems

4) support Tribes in effectively meeting program and administrative requirements that align with operational conditions in Tribal communities

Take action TODAY to support this legislation by telling your Senators to co-sponsor the bill: https://www.nicwa.org/take-action/ #/
