America Ferrera and John Paul Lederach — The Ingredients of Social Courage 11/06/2019

I have been listening to this today and found the part (besides the rest of it) about Critical Yeast reminded me of LitKnit. Enjoy the talk - critical yeast begins around 35:36:

America Ferrera and John Paul Lederach — The Ingredients of Social Courage A culture-shifting artist and a peacemaker on how change happens in generational time.

What reading slowly taught me about writing 10/02/2019

The Lyndale Manor LitKnit circle is currently reading her book, "Brown Girl Dreaming." It is soooo good! Enjoy Jacqueline Woodson's Ted Talk:

What reading slowly taught me about writing Reading slowly -- with her finger running beneath the words, even when she was taught not to -- has led Jacqueline Woodson to a life of writing books to be savored. In a lyrical talk, she invites us to slow down and appreciate stories that take us places we never thought we'd go and introduce us to....

How we can face the future without fear, together 09/26/2019

This is a lot of why LitKnit does what it does:

How we can face the future without fear, together It's a fateful moment in history. We've seen divisive elections, divided societies and the growth of extremism -- all fueled by anxiety and uncertainty. "Is there something we can do, each of us, to be able to face the future without fear?" asks Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks. In this electrifying talk,....

Are you a knitter who is interested in teaching your craft and helping neighbors get to know each other? LitKnit needs facilitators! We are looking for facilitators to hold circles in these libraries: Franklin, Brooklyn Park, East Lake, North Regional, Brookdale, Washburn and Hopkins. Our hope is to find facilitators that come from the neighborhoods these libraries are located in and from a variety of backgrounds so that we may truly represent the diversity that exists in our communities.
LitKnit circles are intergenerational gatherings of between 8 to 10 neighbors, 8 years old + that meet for an hour once a week to learn a craft, connect with each other and listen to stories being read to them while they work on their projects.

Pay: $40 per week per circle session + $20 per hour for 3 hours of training = $640. This is a contract position.

Circle Sessions: Circles will run from January – May 2020 for a total of 16 weeks. Facilitator responsibilities will be for 1.5 hours per session: 15 minutes to set up, 1 hour facilitation of circle, 15 minutes to clean up. Librarians will also be present at and assist the circle and facilitator.

Preparation/Training: LitKnit circle process creator, Jaime Gjerdingen, will train you in how to teach knitting to multiple ages, solve knitting mistakes, the LitKnit check-in sharing process and LitKnit circle facilitation. Two training hours will be at the Augsburg Park Library circle for you to experience an established LitKnit circle and the remaining hour will be detailed, one-to-one training. Then, when you begin the circle(s) at the library(s) you are assigned to either Jaime or Jackie (Augsburg Park librarian) will be present for your first two circle(s) to assist you. Contact Jaime at [email protected].

One of our new Augsburg Park circle members is Jayveon. Holy buckets. He is a natural knitter! Within his first row of knitting he was correcting his stitches himself as he knitted them. I have never experienced such a young person conceptualize the stages of the knit stitch so quickly. Well done, Jayveon!

The Augsburg Park Library circle has begun again! There are new faces and quite a few known ones. We are continuing onward in our current story, Egg and Spoon by Gregory Maguire. So good!
