Today we got a chance to witness a tangible result of the recovery process. Porfirio started in our jail program almost 4 years ago and was released into our post-incarceration support programming 2 years ago. He started his own catering business, he gives back by working in the jail teaching a chefs class to our current detainees, and he’s back to being an amazing father to his three kids and a wonderful husband. And because of Porfirios incredible commitment to this process, the States Attorney dismissed all of his cases today. He is free, he is in recovery, he is the reason we keep doing this work. Congratulations Porfirio Roman, you deserve all the good things, you are where you dreamed of being 4 years ago.

It’s with great pride that we’re finally able to announce the opening of the county’s first FREE 24-hour access Narcan vending machine. It’s located outside of our main offices at 210s. 5th street in St. Charles. Anybody can access the machine any time day or night - you do not have to be a client or affiliated with Lighthouse in any fashion.
For those of you that don’t know - Narcan will reverse an opioid overdose. It has saved the lives of countless friends and family members over the years, and should be readily available to anybody that needs it - regardless of their ability or desire to access services in any other capacity. When someone is treated in this fashion - with compassion instead of shame - it could give them that one last chance to realize that help is out there and start them towards the path of recovery.
To be able to offer this and other services for free is a central philosophy of Lighthouse. While some other treatment providers will deny access to this or other forms of care (unless of course you have a PPO) we have based our entire business on treating the people that need help - regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. We do not believe in, nor will we ever support, a corporate treatment model that only treats those that can afford the help. We are grateful to the Kane County Health Department for their financial support in assisting us in the purchase of this machine and continuous supply of Narcan over the years.

Former jail residents, turned entrepreneurs and living a sober, thriving life. As you may know Chef Porfirio (on the left) operates our inmate chef program and offers catering services. Mike Griffin (right) operates a sober rideshare for treatment center transports. Today, he turned “sober eats” and delivered Chef P’s catering order. Providing guidance and programming while they’re in custody then supporting them after release proves time and again to truly correct life paths.

Former detainee, Rick Swain, who exited through our return-to-work program came back to share his success on the outside with other men from Recovery Pod who are hoping for a second chance. Re-entering people with wrap-around support is the toughest on crime we can get. .
