The Deeper Significance of Diwali 🪔

The festival of Diwali is celebrated during the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. This celebration has many meanings, including the victorious homecoming of Lord Rama to Ayodhya. It is also connected with Lord Krishna’s victory over the evil Narakasura, whose dying wish was to commemorate the occasion by lighting lamps to dispel the darkness he had wrought over all creation.

Lord Buddha said, “Appo Deepo Bhava” or be a light unto yourself. He said that just lighting a single lamp was not enough and hence inspired his followers to be a light for everyone around in order to dispel the darkness of ignorance.

Diwali also involves the distribution of sweets, which signifies the importance of being kind and compassionate to others around us. The tradition is to go and distribute sweets. In life’s interactions, we get along with people, and the same people may go against you at some point in time. To put an end to all that, Diwali is celebrated. When you realize that you are the light, you forget all the bitterness of the past and can get along with everyone.


The main purpose of Diwali is to remind us to make life a celebration.
