Being 90s kids, bands like Pixies and Nirvana are part of our DNA.
And not only as indie rock musicians, but also recordists, Steve Albini is definitely part of our music family tree.
Thatās the amazing thing about music...or any art for that matter. Itās influence stretches wide, wider than you would ever imagine - and through it part of us lives on long after weāre gone.
Steve, sad to see you go, but weāll give some great albums a spin and think of you.

Itās been radio silence for usā¦so we could make some noise.
I know weāve been quiet on the socials, but itās so we could get back to the good stuff - making some great music. And while I canāt quite share it with you yet, I can give a sneak peek at the artwork from some upcoming releases.
In 2024, weāre going EDM. Pop. Indie Rock. Jangle Pop. Stoner Rock. Singer-Songwriter.
Thrilled to share it with you before too long! Maybe will let some sneak listens out to our email listā¦

This pickture (see what I did there?) might not look that striking, but for me it is a major achievement.
I borrowed this tip from the great James Clear and making your progress towards a habit tangible and visible by placing a paperclip (or in this case guitar pick) in a receptacle of choice every time you get a rep in for whatever habit you are trying to build.
For me - I want to really increase my output of music as well as hone my skills of writing and recording, so everytime I work on either I took a pick from the glass on the left, and placed it in the one on the right.
So that glass is definitely āhalf-fullā with progress. Every pick, a vote for the person I want to be - and a lot of music coming as a result. Iām so proud of that glass of picks and even more proud of the empty glass next to it!
Hope you guys get to cast some votes for yourself today.

Iām just going to say it: This song has some Olympic-level wordplay.
In full confession, I may be biased š but you also have to celebrate the songs youāre proud of. Annnnd this here piano pop-rock gem is one of my favorite Red Herring tunes for its witty lyrics that also captured the core of the whole quarter life crisis the album is centered around.
In this carousel, we unpack just a bite of one of the verses and break it down...but if you want the FULL breakdown, check out our podcast episode on the song and the lyric video on our Youtube.
Just comment āpodcastā and weāll DM you the link to the podcast and the lyric video! šļø š¤š»

If you want to write better songs...
..learn covers.
I like this strategy of practice because it's fun and inspiring because it's something novel - I love my songs but if you play them over and over again they can start to seem dusty and old. Or you can fall into a rut, churning out the same songs in only mildly different forms.
Learning covers teaches you new voicings, tricks, ways to thing about songwriting or arrangement you can apply to your original music (and you will).
I never took (beyond a few) music lessons - I learned by learning songs. Whatever I was turned on to. This inspired my eclectic style and was always challenging in a new way - similar to rotating in new exercises at the gym (or so I hear from...people that go to the gym)
And...because it's fun and novel it keeps you coming back to practice more which will only help you get better at your instrument. Better at your craft. Making better, more interesting art.
What's the last cover you learned? Throw it in the comments below ā¬ļø
