June 22 is World Rainforest Day 🌿

Rainforests are Earth's oldest living ecosystems, covering roughly 6% of the planet's land surface.

They are home to more than half of the world's plant and animal species, making them the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth.

The Amazon Rainforest alone contains more than 10% of all known species on the planet.

Rainforests play a vital role in sustaining life by helping produce a significant portion of the world's oxygen and fresh water. They are also massive carbon sinks, absorbing billions of tons of carbon dioxide and helping combat climate change.

It can take up to 10 minutes for a single raindrop to travel from the top of the dense forest canopy to the forest floor below.

More than 25% of modern medicines originate from rainforest plants, yet less than 1% of rainforest plant species have been tested for their medicinal properties.

Rainforests face growing threats driven by human expansion and climate change. The most severe dangers include large-scale deforestation, habitat degradation from resource extraction, and shifting climate patterns that disrupt critical rainfall cycles.

More than half of the world's original rainforests have already been cleared, primarily for agriculture, logging, and cattle ranching.

The conversion of rainforest land for cattle production and large-scale monoculture crops such as soy and palm oil remains the leading cause of rainforest destruction worldwide.

To learn more about the challenges facing tropical ecosystems—or to support conservation efforts—consider exploring the work of the Rainforest Trust and the Rainforest Alliance.

Protecting rainforests isn't just about saving trees—it's about preserving biodiversity, safeguarding clean water, stabilizing the climate, and securing a healthier future for generations to come. 🌎🌱
