Sad news for the play therapist community.
With heavy hearts, we join the play therapy community in mourning the loss of Dr. Garry Landreth.
The Texas Association for Play Therapy is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Garry Landreth, a leader whose influence helped shape the field of play therapy and touched countless lives around the world. Dr. Landreth’s vision extended far beyond developing a therapeutic approach, rather a way of seeing children with dignity, empathy, and unwavering belief in their capacity for growth and healing.
Through his teaching, mentorship, writing, and advocacy, he inspired generations of play therapists to honor the child’s voice and trust in the power of relationship.
Across Texas and beyond, his impact can be found in the playrooms he inspired, the professionals he mentored, the programs he helped establish, and the children and families who have benefited from his life’s work. His contributions created a foundation upon which so many of us continue to build, learn, and serve.
As we grieve this tremendous loss, we also celebrate a life devoted to children, families, students, and the profession he loved so deeply. The values he embodied compassion, humility, curiosity, and service will continue to guide our work and strengthen our community. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Garry’s family, loved ones, colleagues, former students, and the entire play therapy community during this difficult time.
The Texas Association for Play Therapy is honored to carry forward the legacy of a man whose dedication helped shape the profession and whose influence will continue to be felt for generations to come.

Choosing between in-person and virtual therapy sessions can seem extremely difficult at first. However, both offer meaningful support in their own ways, and the goal is to find what works best for you at this moment.
Virtual therapy can offer comfort, flexibility, and accessibility, allowing you to show up from a space that feels familiar and safe. In-person therapy can offer connection, a change of environment, and a grounded space away from everyday distractions. Both support growth, reflection, and healing in meaningful ways. There is no "right" choice. Your needs, schedule, and comfort level all play a role in what setting feels like the best fit. What matters most is having a space where you feel safe enough to show up as you are, whether that’s from home or in person.

Showing growth or making progress is often talked about as something exciting and motivating, but sometimes it feels uncomfortable.
Healing, setting boundaries, trying new things, speaking up for yourself, or stepping outside of familiar patterns can feel awkward, emotional, or even overwhelming before they start to feel empowering. Discomfort does not always mean you are doing something wrong. Sometimes it means you are learning and moving through change in ways that challenge old habits and comfort zones.

Self-care is often treated like something extra, but in reality, it is necessary. ☁️
Your mind and body are not meant to function in constant stress, pressure, or exhaustion without care and recovery. Rest is not something you have to earn after burnout, it is an important part of maintaining your well-being. Taking care of yourself in small, consistent ways can help you feel more grounded, present, and supported in everyday life.
Resetting does not have to be anything big. It can look like journaling, resting, listening to music, going for a walk, watching your comfort show, or doing something creative. Little moments of care can make a bigger difference than we often realize.
