Dampers are a little door or flap that controls air flow to the fire and can also seal the cold air from coming down your chimney with no fire. This small part of your chimney’s mechanics has a big role in keeping your home safe. Sadly, it is also prone to a variety of problems.

Here are a few of the best woods to burn in your fireplace:
Oak - Known for a long and steady flame, it just needs at least a year to properly cure.
Hickory - This wood is popular in the world of meat smokers for its signature scent, but it also has an excellent heat output.
Maple - Maple is a mix of the two woods above, it has a steady flame, and a light sweet smell when burned.

Top concerns with Leaves and Debris.
1. If leaves and pine needles get in the chimney flue they can
cause a variety of issues. They can build up down at the
damper and cause a jam. They may be wet and get caught on
the sides and block airflow, not to mention critters may find
the leaves, and think home sweet home and take up
residence. In some cases leaves can cause a chimney fire as
well. Most of these concerns can be prevented with a proper
cap with a steel mesh. This keeps the leaves and critters out.
2. Outside your chimney leaves and needles can build up
where your roof meets your chimney. Here in Georgia, we get
a lot of rain, and leaves like to hold on to that moisture and
speed up deterioration of your roof, the flashing and even the
brickwork. Not to mention if they dry out, and you have a
fire, sparks may fall on them and set your roof on fire. This is
why it’s policy to have tree branches 10 feet away from the
chimney to keep leaves away from your chimney.
Fall is here, do you have a proper cap installed? Do you have
debris building up around your chimney? Give us a call at
770-841-2681. Your home's safety is our top priority.
