Sheet piles are panels with interlocking connections that are driven into the ground via either an impact or a vibratory pile hammer. While this type of pile is rarely used in permanent construction, it is excellent when it comes to providing structural resistance in deep excavations.
In pile driving construction, the term “springing” means that the pile is vibrating too much laterally from the blow of the hammer. Several things can cause this, including a crooked pile, a pile where the butt has not been squared off properly, or a misalignment between pile and hammer.
If you are on a renovation or restoration project and concrete pillars were used as part of the construction, they may need to be replaced. While concrete is quite durable, certain climatic or ground conditions can damage the materials. Call us for removal and replacement of damaged piles.
Which famous city is constructed on piles that were driven into the ground? Amsterdam. Unlike many other types of cities that used piling construction for specific features, Amsterdam is almost entirely constructed on a layout system of piles.
Construction piling creates a kind of ground treatment that allows for foundational strengthening through load bearing support systems. Whether it is concrete piles, timber piles, or steel piles, construction piling makes it possible for soil to support and hold heavy buildings.
For construction around wetlands or other environmentally sensitive areas, piles driven with vibrationless technology can keep the project moving. The piles can be installed to create work zones above the area, and then they can be removed once the project is completed.
Pile drivers have existed for a very long time and even the Roman Empire used them. In fact, it is said that the construction of the Caesar's Rhine Bridges in Rome, which date all the way back to 55 BC, were constructed using ancient pile drivers.
Friction can shorten the service life of some of the materials used in pile construction. To counter this, surface coatings can be applied to minimize this hazard before they are driven.
Pile driving offers a wide range of uses and applications and can be applied to virtually every form of construction. Almost any construction project that requires deep-driving, extraction, and foundation preparation requires pile driving in one form or another.
A piling rig is a type of construction pile driver that is used in foundation engineering. Piling rigs excel in yielding ground types like clay, silt, and sandy soil. Piling rigs are most often used in cast-in-place piling and foundation reinforcement projects.
In industrial property construction, vibrated concrete piling (VCP) devices are often used in the building of warehouses and other similar structures. In fact, the VCP is a most efficient form of industrial pile driving, as it uses enlarged heads (located in each pile) for load transferring via the slab foundation.
Perhaps the earliest mention of a pile driver comes to us from written documents that describe a pile driver being used over 5,000 years ago at the Crannogs at Oakbank in Scotland. A pile driver was said to have been used in the construction of Loch Tay in Scotland as well.
