Literacy is the essence of learning, but to be truly literate, students need background knowledge.

Here are some of my thoughts on teaching math. (and teaching in general)
1) Good teachers cannot stick to a written curriculum. Teachers must adapt each lesson to their students.
2) Teach students to memorize math facts right from the start. If students are well advanced in school but still do not know their facts, teach them. A teacher can do this while teaching where students are. A teacher can teach math facts while teaching a student to multiply polynomials or calculate probability, but if a student doesn't know the facts, don't ignore that. Make him learn the facts.
3) Being able to get the facts with tricks or counting is not sufficient. This slows a student down and takes away from thinking about higher math. A student must know the facts. Rote learning is learning, and a certain amount of rote memorization is necessary for efficient calculation and for understanding future concepts.
4)Understanding is meant to lead to calculation and later application.
5) Teachers must create and structure lessons, but they must also adapt those lessons to their students.
6) Show students that math is about finding and explaining patterns, that math is a type of reasoning, a way of thinking. The goal of math is to teach students to think logically.
If you or your student is planning to take the SAT or ACT, summer is a great time to get tutoring.
