✨ Hernia Awareness Month ✨

Common Types of Hernias:
1. Inguinal: Accounts for over 70% of all cases and occurs mostly in the inner groin. Men are significantly more likely to develop these than women.
2. Umbilical: Occurs when part of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall near the belly button.
3. Hiatal: Happens when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest cavity.
4. Incisional: Develops at the site of a previous surgical incision where the abdominal wall has weakened.

Common Symptoms:
- Be on the lookout for a bulge or lump in the abdomen or groin that may worsen with coughing, bending over, or lifting.
Other symptoms include:
- Pain or aching in the area of the bulge
- A feeling of fullness, pressure, or heaviness
- Acid reflux or chest pain (specifically for hiatal hernias)

When to Seek Immediate Care:
- Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following, which could indicate a "strangulated" hernia (blood supply is cut off):
- Severe, sudden pain that quickly intensifies
- A bulge that turns red, purple, or dark
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fever
- Inability to pass gas or have a bowel movement
