Manners, Etiquette and Life Skills Lessons

04/03/2023

Dear All,
As much as I have been wanting to keep teaching my classes, I have been very busy with my 4 kids afterschool activities plus a full time job from 8am – 5 pm.
Now my husband has accepted a position in his company that will take us back to Singapore. We will be moving in the first week of June. As you can imagine, I will be super busy with the relocation logistics.

I wanted to THANK YOU for your support during the time I was able to share my passion with you.

I don’t know what will happen but if we ever come back to Northwest Arkansas, I look forward to hearing back from you.

Kindly,

Monica

A few days ago I was honored to share my knowledge with a group of International Students from Panama at the University of Arkansas.

The Special Office Programs creates opportunities for these students to achieve college success and I was able to share some tips on how to act on a business lunch or function.

The Office of Special Programs works to prepare sponsored international students for college success. Their goal is to train scholars in academic readiness, English as a second language, college-ready math and science skills, confidence building and leadership skills. They are the link between students, sponsor and the university academic community.

Thank you again University of Arkansas PAPSS Program for the opportunity. It was a delightful afternoon!

Waiter or Server?

Modern etiquette suggest to call them servers since they are not there simply waiting on us.

Never be rude to them. They are there to help you and even though they are being paid to do their job, they deserve our respect.
If you need them, avoid snapping, clapping or aggressively waving.
Instead, try making eye contact or raising your fingers slightly above your shoulder.

Remember to always say the magic words: Please and Thank-You and look them in the eye while they are taking your order.

When in France, do as the French do.

Utensils at 12 o’clock 🕕 and prongs facing down 🍴meaning you are finished with your meal. Hands always above the table. Never on your lap.

One of the main differences between American vs Continental Style. 🇫🇷

Forgot someone’s name? 🤨

It’s ok to ask it again. Just say “Excuse me, can you remind me of your name?” Instead of: “Excuse me, I forgot your name”.

By saying “forgot” you might make them feel unimportant.

After a busy summer moving houses 🏠 and having family visiting for a few weeks, it feels great going back to what I love to do. ☺️

I was super excited to start teaching again with these amazing group of sweet girls. We talked about the importance of always showing good manners and etiquette rules to help them become more confident in their lives.

Lots of laughs 😆 and yummy food 🍰 helped to practice social and table etiquette rules.

These girls rocked !!! 🤘🏻 It was a joy to have them.🤗

💦

As a courtesy to the next person using the sink after us, we can take a few more seconds to clean it with the same towel or paper used to dry our hands. 🖐🏼

Remember etiquette is doing what you can to make others feel better by being kind, thoughtful, considerate. ☺️

This small act only takes a few seconds. Do it at somebody’s home or at a public space like a restaurant, theatre, movies, grocery store, etc.

Want to avoid the lip ring (from lipstick 💋or natural oils from your mouth) and fingerprints 🖐🏼 all over the glass? 🍷🥃🥛

Drink from the same point of the glass every single time and hold it at the bottom keeping your fingers together all the time.

WHY SAYING “PLEASE ENJOY” IS BETTER THAN SAYING “BON APPÉTIT”

‘Bon Appétit” is a French phrase that translates to "good digestion," which some might consider improper because it brings up someone’s bowels at the dinner table.🤢
Instead try saying "please enjoy" before guests begin eating. This is a better way to start off a meal.😉

With the Tokyo Olympics taking place, I thought it would be fun to share some Japanese etiquette manners and rules.

🇯🇵 It’s not good enough to arrive just on time; you’re expected to arrive earlier than the appointment time.

🇯🇵 You will hardly see any trash on the streets and even less trash cans. People usually keep it with them until they find one or arrive home.

🇯🇵 In public places, you’re expected not to make loud noises. Put your cell phone in silent mode when you are in public transportation.

🇯🇵 When you’re eating at a Japanese cuisine restaurant, try to use chopsticks. If you don’t have the confidence to use chopsticks well, you can still ask a waiter for forks and knives.

🇯🇵 Don’t play with your chopsticks, never stick them vertically in your rice bowl and never use them to pass a piece of food to someone else’s chopsticks directly.

🇯🇵 Slurping is ok while eating soup and noodles such as ramen, udon, and soba. It shows that you’re enjoying your food.

🇯🇵 Pour drinks for everyone else first, and then they will pour your drink in return.

🇯🇵 Never try to tip at a Restaurant. If you really enjoyed the food or service, a smile should be enough.

🇯🇵 Bow politely; bend your head and back in a straight line when you meet someone, thank someone, or say goodbye.

🇯🇵 When you greet Japanese people, just bow or shake hands. Do not hug or kiss.

🇯🇵 When visiting someone’s house, bring a gift for the host, preferably nicely wrapped.

🇯🇵 Japanese people never wear shoes inside of a house. If you’re invited to someone’s home as a guest, you may be offered a pair of slippers.

PS: I’m the one wearing the green jacket when we visited Japan back a while ago.😉 I must return soon !!! If you have never been there, I highly suggest you go there one day. It is one of my favorite countries and cultures in the world.
