Talk about a long time coming !
George Washington appointed Israel Putnam commander of the US troops in New York March 29th 1776. Old Put as he was called served notably as an officer with during the French and Indian War. Mohawk warriors captured him, but he was saved from the ritual burning given to enemies by intervention of a French officer,
with whom the Mohawk were allied. ( see pic)
During the American Revolutionary War his reckless courage and fighting spirit became known far beyond Connecticut's borders through the circulation of folk legends in the American colonies and states celebrating his exploits.
