Building endurance on the trumpet is a lot like building endurance as an athlete.
Pro athletes don’t just repeat movements over and over. They refine them. Every repetition is intentional. They aim to remove unnecessary tension, improve efficiency, and make sure that when game day comes, nothing is wasted. They don’t rely on effort alone. They rely on control.
The same applies to the trumpet.
Endurance isn’t built by “pushing harder” for longer. It’s built by learning to do less, more efficiently.
Before and during playing:
A relaxed, full breath.
A stable, confident setup.
An engaged core with a relaxed upper body.
A clear focus on producing the most resonant sound with the least unnecessary pressure at the mouthpiece.
When this is done correctly, fatigue doesn’t show up randomly. It shows up in the right place.
If the first thing that gets tired is your surrounding musculature rather than the lips themselves collapsing or overworking, you’re likely moving in the right direction.
That’s how endurance is actually built on the horn: not through force, but through efficiency repeated over time.
If you want help building this kind of efficiency in your playing, this is exactly what I work on with dedicated players. Coaching subscriptions are available through the link in my bio.

High notes on trumpet are exciting, which is why they get all the hype. But being able to squeak them out alone won’t earn you opportunities in a concert or gig setting.

Sound, time, pitch, articulation, and musical  intent are what will make people want to hear you play, and hire you…

Build those first, and everything else gets easier, including playing high notes!

When you reach out to someone about a collab, you’re not just asking for creativity.

You’re asking for:
• their time
• their name / brand
• their audience
• their trust

That’s why the approach matters.
A thoughtful message includes context:
• what the project is
• what stage it’s in
• and who’s already involved

That gives the other person a clear picture of what they’re being invited into, both creatively and practically.

It’s also important to be transparent about collaborators from the start. Team size affects more than just workflow—it can affect credit, ownership, and how splits are handled if the track is released. More people changes the structure, not just the sound.

For the same reason, adding someone to a project later on is best handled as a conversation, not an assumption. Bringing in a new collaborator can change how splits are divided, how rights are shared, and how the release is organized. Asking first ensures everyone is comfortable with those changes before moving forward.

Most collaboration issues don’t come from bad intentions—just unclear expectations.
Clear communication early on leads to smoother collaborations, fewer misunderstandings, and better outcomes for everyone involved.

Please share this so everyone can start winning together!

Almost every piece of music you hear is built within specific frameworks such as a key, a tempo, and a time signature. Sometimes these frameworks are simple and stay the same throughout a piece. Other times they change, with multiple key changes, tempo shifts, or time signature changes happening within the same song.
At their core, scales are the foundation of these keys. When you practice scales, you’re learning the musical “alphabet” of the key you’re playing in.
That’s why there are so many scale patterns and exercises. They’re not just drills. They’re tools that teach you how to “spell” in music. As you practice scales and exercises built from them, you start committing these sounds and patterns to muscle memory. Over time, this makes it easier to form musical “words” and phrases without having to think about every note.
The more familiar you are with your scales in all keys, the easier it becomes to translate what you hear or imagine in your mind into actual music on your instrument.

I was reminded last week what progress really looks like. Consistent, incremental improvements over time is where it’s at! My guy Seth is doing just that; he took the guidance, followed the plan we laid out, and the results are showing. Two months in, and the progress is undeniable. I couldn’t be happier for him.

If you want guidance, accountability, and real progress, then book a lesson.

Trumpet lessons shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all.
Every student has different musical interests and goals. While fundamentals matter for everyone, practice works best when it’s connected to the music you actually want to play.
I help students build confidence and solid playing through practice that aligns with their interests, so the work feels musical and purposeful.
More info about lessons is in the link in my bio, or feel free to reach out if you have questions
