Lisa's Little Rescue
We are a licensed 501c3 wildlife rescue specializing in mammals serving Winnebago, Ogle, and Boone counties. Also founding member of the Animal Rescue Expo.
We are a 501c3 that believes that all wild animals deserve to live freely in the natural world whenever possible, and to be protected from unnecessary death and suffering. As human conflict and extreme weather intertwines with the natural world, wild animals often become orphaned or injured and need our help. We work tirelessly to rehabilitate orphaned, injured and sick wild animals with an emphas
Dinner time! Once a week they get more "natural" foods. Tonight the older opossums are getting medium white mice and the smaller ones here are getting pinky mice. Opossums eat mostly road kill and dead things, and thats obviously not an option to offer during rehab (especially with 53 opossums). It's also very expensive to feed feeder mice ($1.50 x 53), so we typically feed less expensive "parts" like chicken wing tips, hearts, necks, etc.
Woodchucks are such clean and smart animals. Do you know they have separate chambers in their burrows for eating, sleeping, and defacating? In rehab, they use a litter box using pine horse chips for keeping their area clean.
This little guy just arrived and we have more on the way. What a season so far. We are grateful to the finders that call right away. It minimizes stress on the animal, and the rehabber!

Trapping and relocating wildlife IS illegal in Illinois. You may be fined upwards of $2500 AND it's inhumane. ALL wild animals are territorial - so by trapping and relocating, not only are you potentially leaving behind orphans to starve to death, you create a vacuum effect - Because the habitat's resources (like food, water, and shelter) remain, the space is quickly filled by new animals moving in from surrounding areas or surviving offspring reproducing faster to reclaim the space. It's counter-productive. We must learn to coexist!!
Here is an interview I Rescued Patisserie & Bakery did at our house last Monday. Very kind of them and such good info that I think is felt by ALL animal rescues of all animals. We only have enough resources to care for so many animals...that includes time and money. We want to help every caller, but we cannot allow the animals already in our care to suffer because we have taken more than we can provide quality resources. Live outcome is our only goal.
Possums keep coming! We now have 48! Yes, 48 little mouths to feed in top of bunnies, squirrels and woodchucks!
We took in NINE more baby opies yesterday. These seven were picked up by WCAS off a deceased mom and our neighbors found two babies in their garage. So, we have over 40 right now. Yikes.
When everyone wants to eat but mom only has two hands. Lol
