Watch a young player shoot in warmups — looks great. Watch them shoot off a closeout in a game — different shot.
What changed? Not the form. The footwork.
The first thing that breaks down under pressure isn’t release or follow-through. It’s the BASE. Heel-anchor instead of full-base. Front-foot lead instead of square. The body’s still in transition when the shot goes up.
You can drill shooting form for hours and not fix this. The drill that fixes it is the one that gets the player into balance UNDER live closeout pressure — over and over, until the base is automatic before the ball even arrives.
Coach Rachel runs this drill series for our 7th–9th grade girls. The work happens before the shot, not in it.

The first time a JV-level player runs against varsity-level players, the gap isn’t speed. The kid was probably the fastest on her team.
It’s decision time.
In rec or younger competition, a player has 1.5 seconds to read a defender, decide, and execute. At varsity level, that window shrinks to 0.5. Same decision, three times less time.
You can’t drill decision-speed in a skills clinic. The only way to train it is to put the player in a live game against defenders who close gaps faster than she’s used to — repeatedly, with coaching between possessions.

In most basketball — school, AAU, rec — your kid plays the same position with the same teammates against the same competition. Whatever role they got on Day 1, they’re still playing on Day 50.
We don’t do that.
In every Just Play session, teams get reshuffled. Different teammates, different position assignments, different matchups every week.
Why? Because the kid who’s the primary scorer on one team has to be the connector on the next. The kid who’s used to defending the slowest player gets the most explosive guard. Roles get rotated by design.
You don’t develop by mastering one role. You develop by doing the work that every position requires — at game speed — week after week.
