Her research this year discovered that prospective voters perceive female politicians as more extreme than their male counterparts. Congratulation to Grad student, Oliver Sun for receiving a 2023 Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Graduate student! Oliver earned this award through his hard work as the teaching assistant for the department’s honor program!

In partnership with Civic Genius, the Democracy Center is bringing two political leaders to Rochester who played pivotal roles in negotiating South Africa's transition to post-apartheid democracy.  The leaders, Rolf Meyer and Mohammed Bhabha, are currently traveling around the world to share what they've learned about navigating political conflict in highly polarized societies.  Meyer and Bhabha will share their experiences and discuss their implications for U.S. politics this coming Tuesday, January 24, from 7:00pm-8:00pm at Temple Sinai in Penfield.  To attend or view remotely register here: https://lessons-from-south-africa.eventbrite.com/. According to the most recent Bright Line Watch survey—Rebound in Confidence: American Democracy and the 2022 Midterm Elections—which was fielded right after the November elections, more voters in the United States now trust the integrity and fairness of elections than they did prior to the midterms. As Professor Gretchen Helmke stated, “Confidence did not decrease. To me, that was surprising and really encouraging.”
