The ecopark is an innovative partnership between Monroe County and Waste Management to provide a "one stop drop off" for residential recycling.

Monroe County and WM have several innovative recycling partnerships including the ecopark, a one stop residential drop off for hard to handle recyclables, and the Monroe County Recycling Center, the primary processing facility for curbside recyclables. This page provides resources on diversion of materials from landfills, including waste reduction, reuse, and recycling options in Monroe County.

You may have heard the news that Sunnking Sustainable Solutions is no longer accepting materials at their Brockport location as they have moved their headquarters to Bloomfield, but don’t fear! They continue to be our partner at the ecopark, processing all electronics and lithium batteries we receive, and they continue to host a number of convenient community drop off events.

šŸ“The ecopark’s website has a handy new map showing the many locations across our community accepting electronics for recycling! https://www.monroecounty.gov/ecopark-electronics

Are you tangling up the recycling system?

In the world of recycling, a tangler is any item that can wrap around equipment at a recycling processing facility putting both the workers and machinery at risk. Tanglers include plastic bags and wrap, clothing, ropes, strands of lights, hoses, tarps, wires, chains, and hangers.

Tanglers end up in the recycling bin usually by good intentions in an act we call wish-cycling: when someone thinks that an item has material value and can be recycled into something different through the curbside bin. However, due to the troubles that tanglers cause at the recycling facility, even if a tangler is made out of recyclable material, it does not belong in the curbside recycling bin.

Keep the recycling facility tangle free and find the right location to take these materials for recycling or reuse.

Grasscycling — leaving grass clippings on the lawn after mowing — is an easy way to create a healthier yard while reducing waste. Grass clippings break down quickly and return valuable nutrients and moisture back into the soil, helping lawns stay green and healthy naturally while reducing the need for fertilizer. Grasscycling also saves time since there’s no bagging or disposal required, and it helps keep tons of yard waste out of landfills each year. To grasscycle successfully, keep mower blades sharp, mow when the grass is dry, and simply leave the short clippings on the lawn where they will decompose naturally.
