It's now getting toward the end of the year. Now's the time to check your withholding, plan Roth conversions, check if your estimated tax payments are correct, do tax loss harvesting, make sure you will have enough deductions to itemize, and any other matters that realize your goals for your income taxes.

I'm hearing many complaints about lower refunds this tax season. There are three main drivers: 1) no more stimulus, 2) reduced child tax credit, and 3) changed withholding tables issued during 2022.

Regarding the last item, it appears to me that many people do not examine their paycheck details closely. As a tax preparer, I give my clients advice on how to make sure enough is withheld for taxes to avoid surprises when filing.

The IRS opens the tax return season officially tomorrow, January 23rd. Many states are also accepting returns.
