CWA Local 1170’s legacy was on full display at last night's United Way of Greater Rochester Annual Labor Recognition Dinner. Two of the annual awards, The Rich Downey Heart of Gold and Robert J. Flavin Community Service Award are presented based on the Legacy of CWA Local 1170 member Richard Downey and legendary former President Robert J. Flavin. Their passion and community service have been memorialized in annual awards. Rich lead the workplace campaign for years at 1170 and his enthusiasm and passion have been passed down to our workplace campaign coordinators Fritz Amrhein, Bill Netchke, Diane Holloway, Jarounda Gamble, Demiah Smith and the dozens of volunteers who’ve helped over the years.
CWA 1170 is recognized frequently as a top workplace campaign in the Rochester Community. Bob Flavin's passion for his community and his ability to galvanize participation from labor unions to meet the needs of the community have been memorialized as well. Bob was truly supportive of the non profit cancer action as it touched his family with the passing of his son Danny at a young age from cancer.
Our current President John Pusloskie is also a leader in the Labor movement's participation with the United Way serving on the Executive Board for fourteen years and his opening remarks every year hit home to encourage participation and rally union support to assist the most vulnerable in our community. Congratulations to the following who were recognized as the annual winners.

Richard M. Downey Heart of Gold Winner:
Sister Kendall Bell from the IUE-CWA

Robert J. Flavin Community Service Award Winner:
Tracey Harrison Local 1199 SEIU

Labor Legacy Award:
Raymond Samson, Retired NYSTU Regional Director

This agreement reflects the hard work of the bargaining committee and the solidarity of the members. Congratulations on a great contract.

CWA members have voted to ratify the new four-year agreement covering AT&T Mobility workers under the Orange contract!

Great contracts are not just won at the bargaining table; they are won on the shop floor through CWA members standing together to fight for a strong agreement. Congratulations on your new contract!

The new contract offers a benefits package that is the best at AT&T and wage increases that are the best in the industry. The contract provides new job security provisions, new FirstNet work, call center scheduling improvements, and much more.

The stronger our union, the stronger our contracts will be in the future.

When we fight, we win!

A message from CWA President Claude Cummings Jr.:

Each year, on April 28, we observe Workers Memorial Day. This is a chance to honor the memories of members who were killed on the job in a work-related incident or who died from an occupational illness. Tragically, most work-related fatalities are preventable. Collective action is the best way to hold employers accountable and prevent future loss of life.

This Workers Memorial Day, we honor the memories of these CWA members and others whose deaths over the past year were work-related. We also remember CWA members who died from an on-the-job injury or illness in the past. They will never be forgotten.

Alberto Rangel, 51, a member of UPTE-CWA Local 9119, was a social worker at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Mr. Rangel was stabbed by a patient on December 4, 2025, and succumbed to his injuries two days later. UPTE-CWA union siblings continue to demand better safety protocols for medical staff in the wake of the loss of their friend and colleague.

CWA continues to honor the memories of Ian Epstein and Danasia Elder, members of AFA-CWA Local 23075 based in Charlotte, N.C., who lost their lives in the fatal crash of American Eagle PSA Flight 5342 on January 29, 2025. Despite setbacks, CWA political activists continue to push for critical aircraft safety systems through the ALERT and ROTOR Acts.

As we grieve those we have lost, we must do everything we can to pass critical legislation like the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act and the Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act so workers can freely form a union and collectively bargain, and the Protecting America’s Workers Act to provide OSHA protection to the millions of workers without it.

Our job is never finished when it comes to health and safety protections at work. We must protect the rights we have won and keep fighting for safer working conditions in every workplace, industry, and sector. That is why on Workers Memorial Day we Honor Those Lost and Fight for the Living.

Thanks to our bargaining committee for a great job and our members here locally at AT&T

We have reached a tentative agreement for CWA members under the Orange contract at AT&T Mobility. The agreement includes substantial improvements in wages and working conditions!

You can read the summary of the agreement here: CWA.org/orangetahighlights

Our bargaining team could not have achieved this tentative agreement without the hard work that you and your coworkers across the country did mobilizing. This is your victory!

CWA members will vote on ratifying the agreement. Your Local will be in touch with you with more details about the upcoming ratification vote.

We can make real improvements at work when we stick together and mobilize. When we stand together, we win.

BREAKING: After nearly four months of hard-fought bargaining, your bargaining team has reached Tentative Agreement they support and that you can be proud of. The gains in this contract would not have been possible without the support and mobilization of CWA members.

Details of the agreement will be announced shortly, but highlights include a robust benefits package, industry-leading wage increases, and more.
