One of my favorites is native columbine. I’ve tried growing it in several places around my house without much luck. Yet at Whitewater State Park it spills out of cracks in the rocks like it was always meant to be there.

Every spring, my art studio turns into a bit of a greenhouse — bulbs rooting in soil, plants taking over every open corner, and sunlight pouring across the room. It’s one of my favorite seasonal rituals and always feels peaceful and full of possibility. But I’ll admit… I’m also looking forward to getting a little studio space back so I can start creating new work again.

This weekend’s hike at Carley State Park felt like stepping into spring’s hidden gallery. Along the trail I found Virginia Bluebells, Rue Anemone, Wild Geranium, Bristly Buttercup, Canadian Lousewort, and native Phlox beginning to brighten the forest floor. Every week brings a new wave of blooms, and I’m always amazed by how much beauty appears before the trees even leaf out.

Since the start of April, I’ve been following the quiet unfolding of native blooms in Whitewater State Park—returning each week to see what has risen from the forest floor.

This week, a new chorus: Largeflower Bellwort, White Trout Lily, Bristly Buttercup and Blue Phlox adding small bursts of color, Two-leaf Miterwort, and Interrupted Fern slowly unfurling.

Early bloomers are quietly taking over the forest floor at Whitewater State Park—Dutchman’s Breeches, Bloodroot, Rue Anemone, Spring Beauty, Field Pussytoes, and Wild Sarsaparilla, each one here for such a short moment.

I’ve been going weekly, watching the ground transform before the canopy fills in. It feels like catching a series of fleeting exhibitions—each week, a new collection.

As an artist, I’m drawn to the ephemerality and variety. Spring doesn’t arrive all at once—it reveals itself, piece by piece.

A few of my largest botanical pieces are on display at the Charter House in Rochester for just one more month.

I’m so grateful for this space and the chance to share this work.

Back in the studio this weekend, I’ve been leaning into a new series inspired by the four seasons—but spring keeps pulling me in. There’s something about this time of year… the soft return of color, the quiet persistence of new growth - I hope to channel this energy into my work.

I found some early bloomers appearing in Whitewater State Park this week, before the forest canopy leaf-out. Prairie Pasqueflower, Round-lobed Hepatica, and a fungi - Scarlet Elfcup.
