Rachel Sackett was awarded a Venture Grant by the Dragon Pride Foundation entitled The Dragon Laces Project. First-grade students are encouraged to learn the important life skill of tying their own shoes. Students who successfully demonstrate their shoe-tying skills become official members of the Dragon Laces Shoe Tying Club, receive a certificate and colorful new shoelaces, and add their name to the Dragon Laces poster. These students are now role models for their peers and can help others learn this valuable skill.

In May, our 3rd-grade students enjoyed a special dictionary presentation from our community partners at Rotary! Students learned valuable dictionary skills and explored how dictionaries can support learning across all subjects. Each student also received a dictionary to take home.

Thank you to Rotary for your continued support and for providing this meaningful learning opportunity for our students!

Our MES students had an incredible time learning beyond the classroom walls during this year’s field trips! 🌟
On May 1st, our 4th-grade students traveled to the Pittsburgh Zoo, where they explored animal adaptations and habitats, connecting their classroom learning to real-world examples from around the globe.
On May 13th, our 5th-grade students visited Penn’s Cave and experienced Pennsylvania’s natural beauty firsthand while learning about caves, rock formations, and the world’s natural structures.
On May 18th, our 3rd-grade students stepped back in time during their visit to Historic Fort Roberdeau, where they expanded their understanding of Revolutionary America through hands-on history experiences.
These trips provided students with memorable opportunities to explore, ask questions, collaborate, and bring their learning to life. A huge thank you to our teachers, chaperones, transportation staff, and families for helping make these experiences possible for our students!

In Mr. Fitzpatrick’s physics classes, students apply principles of structural engineering and physics to design, test, and optimize a balsa wood bridge structures utilizing ModelSmart Bridge software and balsa bridge kits. Through the engineering design process, students analyzed forces such as tension and compression, evaluated bridge efficiency, and developed problem-solving and collaboration skills while constructing a bridge that maximized strength-to-weight ratio. These bridges, if designed and constructed effectively, hold over 100 pounds.

What a sweet way to celebrate our 8th graders!
Students enjoyed a special donut breakfast sendoff! They enjoyed their donuts while signing each other's yearbooks as they wrapped up their middle school journey together.
We are so proud of the Class of 2030 and all they have accomplished during their time at SCMS. While we will certainly miss seeing them in our halls next year, we know they are ready for great things in high school!
