Celebrating 45 years of Alexander’s and culinary innovation! Back in March 1979, our founder signed the lease for the inaugural location at 125 E Campbell Ave.- it was a nearly condemned building located in the then run down City Market. Her vision was clear - Roanoke needed a food-centric restaurant akin to the progressive bistros opening elsewhere, even if sleepy Roanoke wasn’t yet aware. In the midst of a culinary revolution emerging in larger cities and trendier locales, Virginia lagged behind and Roanoke was in the dark. It’s hard to believe now, but we stirred quite the controversy back in 1979 when we opened the first “new restaurant” downtown . Stay tuned as we share more milestones leading to our opening in October 1979.
