Cave Spring Knights

ve Spring Junior High School became present day Cave Spring Middle School, which houses grades 6, 7 and 8. Also during 2002, Hidden Valley High School was first opened and half of the Cave Spring High School population was fed into Hidden Valley due to overcrowding at Cave Spring. Starting in 2006, renovations were being done to multiple sports buildings and complexes on and off of the high school campus. The project was called "Project 50", in honor of the school's 50th anniversary. In the fall of 2008, the main entrance and front lobby of the high school was completely renovated and re-opened in the spring of 2009. Cave Spring High School is one of the two high schools that serve SW Roanoke County and one of the five high schools that serve the Roanoke County school district as a whole. The mascot and nickname of the high school is the Knights. The official school colors are scarlet, black and white. As of the 2010 school year, the enrollment of Cave Spring High School was approximately 894 students. The school is currently rated as the #1 public high school in the entire Roanoke Valley (which includes all of Roanoke County, Roanoke City and the City of Salem) for academic performance and the high average GPA's of Cave Spring students. The current principal is Steve Spangler and the two assistant principals are Fiona Hill and Tracey Lange. The athletic director is John Hartness. Cave Spring High School has some famous and notable alumni. Tiki and Ronde Barber both graduated from Cave Spring in 1993 and both went on to play in the NFL. Tiki played for the New York Giants as a running back and Ronde plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a cornerback. Tiki also later became an NBC News anchor for the "Today Show." Another notable Cave Spring alumnus is J.J. Redick who graduated in 2002. He led the Knights to a men's basketball state championship his senior year (2001 - 2002) and played for Duke University before being drafted into the NBA to be a guard for the Orlando Magic. Other notable alumni include George Canale (1983), a 1st baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers, Tyler Lumsden (2001), a pitcher for the Houston Astros, Matt Trent (2001), a St. Louis Cardinals pitcher, Tom Hagan (2002), a Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder, Danny Aiken (2006), a long snapper for the New England Patriots and former University of Virginia football player, Kevin Munson (2007), drafted to play for the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 4th round of the 2010 MLB draft and Josh Henderson (2010), a freshmen center on the Vanderbilt University men's basketball team. Cave Spring is also known for their outstanding performance in athletics in addition to academic performance. All Cave Spring High School sports teams currently play in the AA River Ridge District, Region IV of the Virginia High School League (VHSL). The sports that the high school offers are football, volleyball, men and women's track and field, men and women's cross country, men and women's swimming, men and women's basketball, men and women's soccer, baseball, softball, golf, wrestling and men and women's tennis. The Knights have collectively won a total of 14 VHSL state championships, seven in AA which are five girls volleyball titles won in the 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2011 seasons and two AA boys basketball titles in 2008 and 2009; one unclassified title in boys golf in 1964; and six AAA titles, which are two girls' gymnastics titles in 1976 and 1981; two boys swimming titles in 2000 and 2001; one girls swimming title in 2001; and one boys basketball title in 2002.
