Kwanzaa celebrated in downtown Roanoke with fire, water, entertainment In a small theater Sunday, far from the madness of holiday gift returns and the refreshment-buying binges that precede New Year’s Eve, a small group of Roanokers celebrated homespun values such as respect for elders, self-confidence and community service.

It's my honor to take a photo with our senior-most member, Mr. Charles Anderson, who will be 95 on February 8th. I was pleased to have remembered his age and his birthday without having to ask him! Whenever I see Mr. Anderson I say "Good to see you!" and he'll relply, "It's good to be seen!" He is also the last living founder of St. Gerard's Catholic Church established in 1946 to serve Black Catholics who couldn't find a church home in the Roanoke Valley.
