📣 Important Update from ATF — New Rule Effective Jan. 22, 2026

The Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives has issued a new regulatory rule called 2025R-54T that updates federal gun law definitions affecting who is prohibited from possessing fi****ms. 

🔎 What the Rule Changes
• Clarifies the federal definition of what it means to be an “unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance” — a key category in federal fi****ms law that makes someone legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. 
• Historically, ATF’s rule had broad language on drug use that wasn’t always aligned with how courts interpreted it. This new rule adjusts the definition to better match statutory language and judicial interpretation. 

📌 Why This Matters
• People who use controlled substances may be banned from buying or owning guns under federal law — but the new rule makes it clearer when use counts as unlawful. 
• The updated definition is intended to focus on regular, ongoing use, instead of isolated or past use that isn’t recent. 
• ATF is accepting public comments on this interim rule until June 30, 2026 before making it final.
