I’ve always had a deep-rooted
passion for the outdoors and the quality of life that comes with being closely connected with nature. Unfortunately, my career in real estate required extensive traveling, so I was stuck in the hectic urban world.
In 2010, we acquired a parcel of land on the Alafia River in Riverview, Florida. The previous owner had maintained a herd of mixed breed goats, which we inherited. Having no experience with goats, my learning experience was rapid and steep.
In early 2012, we visited DCL Boer Goats in Lecanto. That’s when I got my first look at a truly professional and compassionate Boer goat operation. Judy and Doyle Long of DCL Boer Goats demonstrated an incredible degree of knowledge and experience in breeding and raising a quality herd. Before we left on that initial visit, we put a deposit down on four full-blooded Boer does. This was the beginning of Alafia Ridge Farms. Upon returning, the herd of mixed breed goats was sold to make room for the new arrivals.

Since that time, with the help of several extremely knowledgeable Boer goat experts and breeders, the progress has been unmistakable. At the 2015 Florida State Fair, we had two does that were born at the farm take First and Second in the Yearling Doe Class (12 to 16 months) and one going on to win Reserve Grand Champion. This reinforced our belief in what could be accomplished with a quality breeding and management program.

With the acquisition of the buck Easy Upgrade in March 2015 at The Other Sale, Alafia Ridge Farms has positioned itself as a breeder of high-quality Boer goats. We also acquired several premiers does of impeccable bloodlines.

Easy Upgrade produced, among others, Eye Catcher, which is one of our main breeding bucks.
Being new to this business, I became acutely aware that if you want high quality animals, you have to start with high quality. Unrealistic expectations that “cute” will somehow evolve into a show competitor is wishful thinking. We’ve made the conscious decision to focus on quality versus quantity.

As we progress, we will be posting the sale of some of our buck and doe kids, as well as a few select mature, does. The proverbial saying “You can’t keep them all!” is so true. As we hate to see them leave as each and every one has been part of the family, we know they will be going to good homes, or they don’t go. We have already sold all of our buck and doe kids from the 2018 kidding. We will begin breeding again this Fall.

We have various shelters in the pastures, such as our Key West theme shown, to ensure their safety and comfort during inclement weather.

Our first building was the Goat Barn in 2012. It serves as the birthing barn, nursery and infirmary. This allows for more close observation during those times its needed most.

As our herd grew, we needed more stalls, mainly for our bucks. In early 2017, we designed and built the Buck Barn specifically to accommodate mature bucks. When our breeder bucks have done their job, we move them there to recuperate. It has served us well.

In May of 2017, we welcomed our newest addition to the family. A three month old Akbash puppy we named Hakan (One who rules). In anticipation of his arrival, we may have gone a bit overboard in building his dog house. In the scorching summer afternoons here in Central Florida, the paddle fan on his front porch was nice, but we took it one step further and added air conditioning. Hakan has adjusted well to his surroundings and growing fast. He’s still growing.
