This is a pretty common scam going around right now.

Tl;dr: customer takes their phone to the Apple store for a cellular issue. Apple takes the phone in the back and cuts the customer’s screen / display cable, breaking the (previously working) phone. Apple store says, “whoops, we broke your phone and your data is gone forever. Sorry, not our problem.” Apple store gives the customer the number for a data recovery company that routinely charges $3,000+ for even the simplest jobs. Apple store doesn’t just replace the screen that they broke like any honest shop would.

Any reputable repair shop would’ve told their customer, “hey, sorry, we damaged this. We’ll fix it.”

But not Apple.

This customer went to the company that MAKES THE DEVICE and was lied to. They brought a working device in, had it broken by a technician certified by the manufacturer, and was subsequently told that in order to get their precious photos and videos back they would have to pay an outside company thousands of dollars…

…when their phone only needed a $300 screen…

…that the Apple store had in stock.

We see things like this very often. It’s really frustrating.

Remember this next time you need your phone fixed. The manufacturer doesn’t always have your best interests in mind.

HP laptop that wouldn't read the SSD (hard drive) after an attempted battery replacement. We checked that the SSD was healthy and confirmed that the laptop was not reading any SSDs.

A quick inspection of the board led us to this knocked-off capacitor. Replaced it and the laptop is fully functional.
