ANOTHER ALERT JUST CAME IN - A case of Neurologic Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) was recently reported in Los Angeles, California. EHV-1 is one of the most common strains of equine herpes virus and is known to cause respiratory disease, as well as outbreaks of abortions and neurologic disease.1
EHV-1 is usually spread through coughing or sneezing. Direct horse-to-horse contact, as well as contact with contaminated feed, equipment, clothing and tack, can also spread the disease. In addition, once a horse is infected, the virus can become latent for the rest of the horse's life. Then, often during times of stress, the virus emerges and the horse begins silently shedding, which puts other horses at risk for infection.
Given that there is no vaccine to protect against the neurologic form of EHV-1, taking appropriate biosecurity measures can help prevent exposure the spread of the disease. Preventive measures include:
•Don't share tack,
•Clean and disinfect your horse trailer after transporting horses other than your own,
•Provide appropriate food, water and shelter to minimize stress on your horses,
•Quarantine new horses for at least 30 days before introducing them to your existing herd, and
•If your horse exhibits any neurologic signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Hi Everyone, Getting word from Outbreak Alert that there have been 3 cases of West Nile Virus in humans in San Diego, Fontana and Irvine. Please be mindful of your horse and have them vaccinated immediately. WNV is a potentially deadly virus that causes inflammation of the brain and threatens horses, birds and humans. While the risk of horses contracting the disease is lower than it used to be, equine WNV remains dangerous and widespread, a serious threat to the health of horses throughout the country. One out of three horses that gets sick from WNV dies or must be euthanized. Be a wise horse owner.
Play Day was a success. Great turn out. Congratulations to our first time participants who took 1st place; Greg McKie - Obstacle Course, Kathy C***s - Pleasure Class, Aubrey Childs - Single Pole Plus. Winner of the Hour Glass race and Washington Poles match race went Cora Steffy who was up against April Behzadian, that was an exciting race to watch as was to everyone else who participated. Congrats to all our winners. You all did a great Job!
A few pictures from the Play Day are available in the Photos section.
