From rocks to dinosaurs to comic cards, Clark Barclay (under the very appropriate moniker The Bins) was a kid obsessed with collecting and today his grown-up fixation lives in the discount-vinyl bin. The Bins’ “found sound” may be composed of dusty castoffs, but Barclay’s meticulous and seamless arranging harmoniously manage to encompass a world of genres, eras and cultures.

A NEW BOSSANOVA RENDITION OF THE BINS’ "SHADE" ENCOURAGES MORE ARTISTS TO REMIX THEIR OWN SONGS — Get Some Magazine Turn on the ‘Shade’ remix when you have a long day ahead of you. You’ll be amazed at how your productivity increases.

Can you remix your own song? 'Shade' was the only song that wasn't selected to be remixed for 'Happiness Completely Remixed,' so I decided to do it myself. Bobby Salehnejad, who played on the original version, put down a groovy brand-new bass line, and Justin Reich tracked those intricate jazz guitar parts. I used many of the original percussion stems played by Gabriel Soriano but slowed them down by 15 BPM. I replaced the original's drums with some 808 drums, similar to the vibe on 'Traveling,' and made the bridge sections' drums a deliberate nod to lofi hip hop (which I have been inspired by a lot lately). I also sang background vocals on this one; you can hear me hitting probably the highest note in my register at 2:51, LOL. The final touch to the remix was tracking the cello, played by the talented Evangeline Lee. The album art was painted by my friend Garret McManus, who has been super supportive of my music over the years, and modified by Lee Ch**te. I hope you like it, thanks!

Binstrumentals Vol. II, by The Bins 07/14/2023

https://thebins.bandcamp.com/album/binstrumentals-vol-ii

I am most attached to the instrumental versions of my vocal songs because that’s how they began, and that’s how they will stay with me for the many years that I work on them. For the few songs that I decide to add vocals to, that process usually comes toward the end of their production. Sometimes I feel like the vocals complete the songs, sometimes I feel like they clutter them. Maybe it’s the nostalgia for the instrumental versions that I grew attached to, or maybe it’s something else. Whatever the reason, the instrumental versions are always very dear to me, so I make an effort to release them as they once were.

Re-producing these songs was not as simple as just stripping them of the vocals and calling it a day. The mixing engineer, Scott Zschomler, and I worked hard to give these songs a brand new mix so they would hold their own as instrumentals— and not sound like backing tracks. This usually means bringing up certain instruments in the mix so they can fill the role of a leading instrument. Removing vocals can also allow us to expand the mix, and reveal some of the details that you may have missed from the vocal versions.

The goal here is not to create a “better” listening experience; it’s simply to create a different one. I hope you can enjoy these songs and appreciate them in a different light.

Thanks for listening!
