Still chasing a leak after checking the chimney? Look at the roofline.
In our 3-part series, we’ve covered water repellents and crowns. Now we’re getting into flashing. Together, these three areas account for 80–90% of the water issues technicians see in the field.
The most common place you’ll find flashing is where the roof meets the chimney. And too often, it’s:
- Improperly installed
- Covered in cracked roofing cement
- Missing altogether

A chimney crown is only as strong as the material it's made from.
Looking at a cross-section of cured crown repair material tells an important story. Is the aggregate distributed evenly throughout the matrix, or has it settled to the bottom during curing?
