Nevada Weather Trivia: The first “Fire-induced Tornado Warning” in the nation was issued by the National Weather Service Office in Reno on August 15, 2020. A massive pyrocumulonimbus tower grew through the afternoon to 30,000 feet over the Loyalton Fire, as it expanded by 20,000 acres. At 2:28 PM, doppler radar indicated rotation in the cell, just south of Chilcoot, California. The alert warned of outflow winds exceeding 60 mph and the possibility of downed trees and new fire starts. Several vortices were caught on video around the time of the warning.
