Happy New Year?

There were no dull moments in 2026: many shows, recording projects, lots of skiing, the revival of my podcast, Conversations for Convergence, international, and cosmic travel (and Burning Man), my parents’ 50th anniversary, seeing Sir Paul McCartney in concert, continued education (formal and otherwise), new incredible friendships, the deepening of old ones, and reconnecting with family. Seeing some of my music finally reach a wider international audience has been an unexpected gift. In a world where so many live in a constant state of emergency, my good fortune is not lost on me. And in that spirit:

It feels dishonest, even cowardly, to avoid the obvious.
I’ll elaborate soon—not to turn up the temperature, but to square my conscience and to share my thoughts with anyone interested.

In short, I hope morals and humility make a comeback in 2026. Too many among us have been scared into accepting the falsity that the world is nothing but a struggle for power, and that ethics are mere virtue signaling—luxuries we can’t currently afford. History offers abundant evidence to the contrary. As the stakes rise, our ethical duties to ourselves and each other do not lessen, but rise.

Meanwhile, a handful of morally bankrupt, megalomaniacal bullies—at home and abroad—are doing everything they can to break up families, international alliances, and the very fabric of our country.

I pray for principled, ethical, practical, measured, honest, and collaborative leadership. Sadly, I don’t see these values winning the day.

Should it need to be stated, I actually care deeply about alleviating suffering and loving thy neighbor. I don’t believe might makes right, or that strength and kindness are mutually exclusive. Many would say these are Judeo-Christian values; some might call them humanist ones. I don’t care what you call them, or which tribe you claim them from. I do care that you share them.

My ear will remain open to anyone seeking to engage in good faith, regardless of political affiliation. I implore us all to be guided by conscience, values, and humility.

Conversation is the last bastion against violence.

Much love,

Eric

#9: Daryl Stuermer—Iconic Guitarist’s Journey from Milwaukee Clubs to Stadium Tours and Mega-hits with Phil Collins and Genesis

Today’s guest is Daryl Stuermer. Daryl has had quite an impressive career which began in Milwaukee in the mid 70s when pianist George Duke of Frank Zappa’s band recommended him for an audition with jazz-violin legend Jean-Luc Ponty. That opportunity led to a European tour and four influential albums, quickly establishing Daryl as a world-class guitarist. In 1977, Daryl landed an audition to replace Steve Hackett as Genesis’s touring lead guitarist, beginning a remarkable 30-year run performing with the band on every world tour culminating in the final Genesis show at the O2 Arena in London in March of 2022.

When Phil Collins launched his solo career in 1980, Daryl became a foundational part of that band—and he’s actually the only member who’s been with Phil since the very beginning. His signature guitar work defined the sound of many of Phil’s classics like “In the Air Tonight,” and “Easy Lover,” and he even co-wrote the Grammy-nominated hit “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven.” In addition to Genesis and Phil Collins, his session credits include Jean-Luc Ponty, ABBA’s Frida, Philip Bailey, George Duke, Eric Henry Andersen (that’s right) and many others. He’s performed on literally some of the biggest shows in history, including a Genesis concert for 500,000 people in Rome in 2007, he’s played the Super Bowl, the Academy Awards, the Grammys, and every chapter of The Tonight Show from the Johnny Carson era, to Leno, and most recently Jimmy Fallon. He’s also released a handful of jazz/rock fusion solo albums through his own label, Urban Island Music.
This episode was particularly special for me—having known Daryl for over fifteen years and having had the incredible privilege of performing with him—both in his band, and with him playing guitar in mine—as well as on a variety of recording projects.
