One man carried the mail through some of the harshest country in the American West.

This week on Map Adventures, I’m telling the forgotten story of George Chorpenning and the 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐥 a dangerous overland mail route that crossed deserts, mountains, and isolated wilderness long before modern transportation connected the frontier.

Using mules animals, rough wagon trails, and pure determination, Chorpenning helped prove that the Central Route across Nevada could work paving the way for the Pony Express and eventually the transcontinental telegraph.
