I recently returned to my home town in Baybay Leyte Philippines after 20 years. This was my home town with deep rooted family relations. This town used to be a beautiful beach town but has grown to be a city. The growth too me by surprise as well as remembering the beautiful beaches. In some ways the country has progressed to have some of world class cities like Manila and Cebu. On the other hand they are still behind in recycling and waste management. Many people choose to retire here due to the low cost of labor and food . (Depending on your lifestyle) The trade is about $1 to 54 pesos. So what can you get for $54-60 pesos. What about lunch. One of my friends family built a 2 bedroom and 2 bath home for $27,800.
Now being in the city you will have to pay more. Significant developments in city like Cebu is becoming expensive depending on location. If your in the beach are it will run you at minimum $65000 for a studio. Its still much better than here. Cost of unskilled labor is where it benefits non locals. So let me give you an analogy. If you are living in an Adult family or Assisted Living Facility here in the USA it may cost you $4500 to $12000 a month or more. In the Philippines you may be able to get a high end condo with maids quarter for $1000-$1500 Us dollars and hire 2 maids for $500. This is ball park figure but its an eye opener for me. You can get a condo room for much cheaper than this but I choosing in my mind the best areas. Another $1000 for food is an more than sufficient.
This is just a quick recap as there are also down sides. Hot and humid weather, food may not be to your liking, and culture.
