What an unforgettable way to wrap up our run of A Man of No Importance! Miryam’s Theater Musings just published a beautiful review of our closing performance, celebrating the massive heart, incredible talent, and creative staging that filled our theater.

Even though the curtain has fallen on this production, we couldn't resist sharing some of her wonderful words about this powerhouse cast and creative team:

Review Highlights:

On Frank Kohel (Alfie): "Frank has a lovely, diffident manner, and then suddenly, his big booming voice fills the space with power."

On the Ensemble: "The rest of the cast is a treat... 13 performers in that tiny space is a lot. Still, everyone was able to manage, and the scenes never felt like they overwhelmed the stage."

On the Creative & Tech Team: Praise for director Micheal O'Hara's simple, effective staging, Chris Nardine’s "lean choreography," Bradetta Vines' period costuming, and Gabe Mangiante's "crisp and professional" music direction.

"Everyone did a great job. Since I saw closing, the cast was clearly emotional on this last day, and it infused the performance with even more heart and soul." — Miryam's Gordon

Thank you to Miryam for the beautiful review, to our incredible company for pouring their souls into this story, and to everyone who packed the house. Up next: we get ready to plug into the digital world with our Season 25 finale, Emojiland: The Musical, opening June 26th!

A note from Director Micheal O'Hara -

What a journey, what a show!

Over three years in the making - I never imagined the path getting this show on a stage would run into so many roadblocks.

In 2004 in Highland Park just outside of Chicago was my first opportunity to see A Man of No Importance (AMONI) on stage. I fell in love with its story and the music that encapsulated its emotional journey. So, in 2022 I began a campaign to find a theater that might mount this production.

After a year of talks I found one! Then the first roadblock hit. The theater ran out of money and had to cancel their last show of the season, MINE! UGH. But it was put on their next season of shows, so I continued to be hopeful. Nope! Second roadblock. The theater went through restructuring and the second half of their season was cancelled.

Luckily, I was sitting next to SSR Managing Artist Director Mark Chenovick during an event and he knew of my journey and suggested that SSR would like to produce AMONI. Could it be possible? YES! 2026 is the year! Then I received a call from Mark. “We have a problem, Micheal” he said.

OH NO could this be another roadblock?

PHEW, just a bump. The show needed to be placed later in the season schedule.

So, June brings a conclusion to a little dream of mine to mount AMONI. What a cast, what a producing staff, what a big smile and so many tears I have shed. It is all worth it. I am so proud of how this production turned out. Cheers to all!

Thank you Micheal for your passion in bringing this show to life on the SSR stage!

SecondStory Repertory is holding auditions for our August 2026 production of HADESTOWN: TEEN EDITION. Book, Music & Lyrics by Anaïs Mitchell. Directed by Alicia Mendez with Music Direction by Tiger Khokunthod and Choreography by Breanne Jensen.

This intriguing and beautiful folk opera delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Following two intertwining love stories – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of immortal King Hades and lady Persephone - Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Inspired by traditions of classic American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, Mitchell’s beguiling sung-through musical pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.
