FROM THE BACK TO THE FRONT: GANNON CHARGES FROM 16TH TO SIXTH AFTER SATURDAY FUEL-PUMP FAILURE AT SHASTA

B&G Motorsports No. 02 overcomes missed qualifying, climbs as high as third in the 125-lap Super Late Model feature

ANDERSON, Calif. — B&G Motorsports left Shasta Speedway on Saturday night with a sixth-place finish that felt, by the team’s own measure, like a win.

After chasing carburetor issues from Friday practice, Saturday looked promising—until the second of three practice sessions. Driver Eric Gannon radioed that fuel pressure had dropped to between zero and two pounds, a clear sign the fuel pump had failed. The No. 02 Midas / Karline’s Restaurant / Advanced Auto Wholesale/ Wait Roofing / Déjà Vu Restaurant / Nor-Cal Garage Door Chevrolet returned to the pits. The crew pulled the pump and hunted a replacement.

Anyone who has changed a competition Chevrolet fuel pump knows the replacement fittings never seem to line up the same way twice. This one was no exception. With help from a friend in the pits, the team made the replacement work. The cost was time: B&G missed its qualifying slot and was locked to the rear of the 16 car Super Late Model field.

Gannon would start 16th in the 125-lap main event.
“Hey, no place to go but forward,” Gannon said. “We’ve got 125 laps to get to the front.”

At the drop of the green he did exactly that. Working past cars that had qualified ahead of him, Gannon was inside the top 10 early and into fourth by lap 40. On lap 69 he took third.

Holding that position began to cost the team its tires. Grip faded, the car grew loose—oversteer as the rear wanted to step out—and lap times slowed. Cars Gannon had already passed started to close. He fought to keep what he had, but as the field wound down to the checkered flag the No. 02 crossed the line sixth.

It was not a win. After the pump failure, the missed qualifying, and a charge from last to third, the team is calling it a victory anyway. Gannon showed what he and the car can do when the night goes sideways. Everything loaded back on the trailer in one piece.

Co-founders Roy Berlinghoff and Eric Gannon, with crew members Mikey Blake, W***y Jones, and Alan Pyzora, now turn to Saturday, October 3, and the season-ending Shasta 125 open show. While not a points race, it typically draws Super Late Model teams from Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, and across California.

“Eric did well and proved what he and the car are capable of,” Berlinghoff said. “Hope we see you all at the track.”
