Hope doesn’t shout, it glows.

In-camera portraits, part of an ongoing exploration using low impact photography with what is around me

🧡Created from a straightforward studio headshot of .rose001, then transformed through digital solarization, facial duplication, and the integration of a garden flower to construct the garment form about a year ago. This is an early experiment marking my shift toward in-camera surrealist photography. Link in bio to see where it began 🧡

Digital solarization composite: a ballerina photographed in my home studio merged with a macro of a California poppy from my suburban permaculture garden. One of my first explorations into surrealism, where reflection and bloom come together, opening me to a slower vision of what’s already around me.

Mirror Series No. 1

A partially digitally solarized portrait of my beautiful niece composited into another photograph I took of a vintage cracked mirror featuring black iris from my garden shot with 180mm lens and off camera lighting.

Her eyes draw me in most, one shadowed and the other half open. 🖤the then and the now

Self-portrait made during the first bloom of my black iris, exploring presence through experimental long exposure and light painting. Inspired in part by ’s portrait of with a single flower, and by ’s commitment to truth without beauty retouching. Aside from color adjustments, everything here is light, motion, and the vulnerability of that moment.

Part 3 “The Arcimboldo Permaculture Series”

“Permaculture’s Promise” eyes altered with the Sabatier effect symbolize clarity and optimism, reflecting permaculture’s potential for renewal and a more balanced, environmentally conscious future.

“Line of Becoming” her calm yet questioning gaze, a wire-wrapped egg nestled in a floral crown, and a deliberate break in the cheek’s curve. A portrait of transformation, tension, and hope for ecological renewal.

“Blurred Iris” the first bloom of the year in my garden, captured in a long exposure while moving the flower to obscure its details. The softened form mirrors the fragile, unpredictable state of our environment.

Maybe my favorite is the series, “We Are Watching”model Aurora wears USDA Zone 9b plants, including a white peony collar inspired by Arcimboldo’s “La Primavera”. Her calm yet direct gaze challenges us to consider our role in the natural world.

Part 2 of “The Arcimboldo Permaculture Series”

“The Rabbit Hole of Consumption,” a spiraling form conveys the dangerous cycle of overconsumption, suggesting a descent into a disordered state which stands in stark contrast to the sustainable cycle promoted by permaculture.

“Vigil for Change” this image captures a moment of reflective observation. A trompe l’oeil which suggests a vast landscape overseen by the humans discerning eye.

“Renewal in Bloom” features Shelbie, my adorable silkie hen, alongside my niece, Aurora whose appearance reminds me of the ethereal beauty of Botticelli’s figures. Central to the composition is a hand-wrapped copper wire setting for an egg, cradled among fresh blossoms, symbolizing new beginnings and the perpetual cycle of renewal inherent in nature.

“Divided Harmony” this iris image explores the dualities and balances inherent in our relationship with nature.

Surrealist portraits about permaculture and quiet resistance to overconsumption.

“Specimen Reversal” part of the “Arcimboldo Permaculture Series” is a portrait created during a light test and later digitally solarized. The image reframes the human as both specimen and witness, suggesting that nature may be watching us just as closely.

“Silkie Shelby” our beloved silkie hen that lives with us who helps break down materials from our suburban permaculture food forest, provides us with joy and eggs. I hope we give back to her as much as she gives to us. Our birds get our organic scraps and organic feed and snacks from our local Central Valley feed store ✔️
