Sunrise Redding
We are the Redding hub of Sunrise, a youth-led movement to face climate change head-on and create a wave of new jobs in the process.
Today is the last day to give public comment to the Mayor and City Council regarding the development of Turtle Bay by commercial developers who have not a thought for Redding or for environmental justice.
"Dear City Council members,
Over the last year, I've worked hard with other citizens to help Redding transform into a more sustainable community, and one that has appeal for future generations. In September, I was surprised to see just how many citizens from all sides of the political spectrum and every walk of life do not want to see this Turtle Bay project devastate the delicate Sacramento River ecosystem in the name of commercial enterprise. It is my deeply held belief that no amount of development money should outweigh the will of the people when it is raised in unanimous chorus.
In addition to being a deeply unpopular use of our land, it is a slap in the face to me and every other young person in Redding that has spoken to members of the council about conservation and the protection of our environment. We have heard privately again and again that Redding City Council members support climate change mitigation and the responsible use of our resources. This plan, if pushed through, will communicate a far louder message: that Redding's wildlife and resources are up for grabs to whoever wants to throw down the cash.
Please stand up for us and prevent the wanton paving over of our ecosystem.
Sincerely,
Dash Waterbury"
Today's march was EPIC. Thank you to everone who showed up and walked with us or met us at City Hall. You can see footage of the event on our Instagram! More pics and video to come in the days ahead.
Some highlights: a large group of activists as young as 5 and as old as 80 marched and sang, we saw allyship from Congressional candidate Max Steiner and North State politician Elizabeth Betancourt, we spoke to the Planning Commission about a tree ordinance for Redding's urban forest. We even made art!
It. Was. Awesome. Hope to see you next time!
Today's the day! At 2:30, we are marching from the Sundial Bridge all the way to City Hall. Hope to see you out there as we brave heat and smoke to deliver a message to the Planning Commission that we want real protection for Redding's urban forest!

Max Steiner is a combat veteran and Democrat running for Congress. He is running to protect our democracy from seditionist and climate change denier Doug LaMalfa in California's 1st District (our congressional district). Max understands the key role climate change is having in driving extreme droughts and fires ravaging our district.
Come see Max speak at our rally on August 10th at Redding's City Hall! We are thrilled to have an ally like Max!
We march from the Sundial at 2:30, and our rally is at City Hall at 3:30! Why? Because we want to show Redding's Planning Commission that change matters to Redding as they consider a new tree ordinance.
US Rep Doug LaMalfa choked up as he describes the loss of Greenville, a Gold Rush era town in our district.
LaMalfa continues to reject climate change science and throw his own constituents under the bus of drought, rising temperatures, and wildfires.
"There's no words," says Doug. Oh Doug. There's words.

We can't wait for August 10th, when we will march from the Sundial Bridge to the Planning Commission meeting at City Hall, and we hope to see you there! We will have a live art piece created at City Hall to highlight Redding's beautiful trees and our act of working to preserve them. Many thanks to The Art Hunger for helping us make this a reality.

Sunrise Redding is holding a Climate March from the Sundial Bridge to City Hall, August 10th at 2:30 pm. We will arrive at the City Hall at 3:30 and commence with a demonstration in advance of the 4:00 pm Planning Commission meeting. We are demanding meaningful action on climate change, including a cap on new gas stations and a real tree ordinance in Redding.
The march will consist of singing and displaying signs in solidarity, as well as speeches from keynote speakers. In observance of the high heat conditions, Sunrise Redding is inviting heat-sensitive demonstrators to participate by driving the demonstration route in solidarity and convening at the City Hall at 3:30 for the final part of the demonstration. Marchers are encouraged to wear hats and sunscreen, and to bring masks and plenty of water.
