On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the final enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom. That moment—delayed but undeniable—marks the spirit of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth is more than history.
It is a testament to perseverance,
a mirror of how far we've come,
and a reminder of how far we must go.
