MUSICAL NOTES FOR 9-27-2026

Our organ prelude this morning was composed by Paul Manz (1919-2009), one of the most influential American church musicians of the twentieth century, renowned as an organist, composer, teacher, and especially for his imaginative improvisations on traditional hymn tunes. A lifelong Lutheran church musician, Manz studied with the distinguished European organists Flor Peters and Helmut Walcha. The text associated with this hymn tune SEELENBRAUTIGAM, originally beginning Jesu, geh voran ("Jesus, lead on"), is by the eighteenth-century Moravian leader and hymn writer Nikolans Zinzendorf. Known in English in several translations, including "Jesus, Still Lead On" and "Jesus, Lead the Way," the hymn is a prayer of Christian discipleship: it asks Christ to guide his people faithfully through the difficulties and uncertainties of earthly life and ultimately to lead them to their heavenly home. The graceful German hymn tune SEELENBRÄUTIGAM was composed by Adam Drese (1620-1701) and dates from the seventeenth century; its name, meaning approximately "Bridegroom of the Soul," comes from the devotional hymn with which the melody was originally associated. Paul Manz's setting of the tune was especially significant in his career: it was the first organ work by Manz to be published. In this chorale prelude, Manz treats Drese's gentle melody in the improvisatory manner that became a hallmark of his organ waiting, allowing the familiar hymn to emerge within expressive harmonies and contrapuntal lines rather than presenting it simply as a harmonized chorale (traditional hymn setting). The resulting music has an intimate, prayerful character the tune seems to move steadily forward, reflecting the hymn's central image of Christ leading the believer on the journey of faith.

HIGHLIGHT OF LAST WEEK'S SERMON:
After they repented in response to his preaching, Jonah was angry with the Lord for having mercy on the Ninevites. He reflects a certain type of cleric who has contempt for the flock he serves. He judges them for not being pious enough or not being committed enough or for their perceived indifference. I wonder if such attitudes are implicit in our attitude to the unchurched. Today with so many social institutions on the decline, many people feel disconnected and experience high levels of anxiety and loneliness that result from this disconnect. Despite all the connections through phones and social media, we long for touch and presence and mutuality which a pocket computer cannot convey. We need deep human connection, and our faith needs community. Faith without church is a contradiction in terms. Christianity is lived out, hand in glove, in the Church. When we see so many unchurched or dechurched today, I’m wondering where is our compassion for them who suffer from the deprivation of faith, prayer, and community. This stuff actually works. I’ve seen it again and again. The despairing soul find true hope in this place. The afflicted and burdened experiencing freedom and release. Sometimes we hold onto this place and our faith as our own secret source of comfort and strength. Like Jonah, we sit by with our private faith, indifferent or even contemptuous of the world, but every time we come to the Lord’s table, he invites us and feeds us as we come with open hands to receive. Communion is not concluded with this solitary moment with the Lord: the God who is gracious and merciful; the Father who is long-suffering and of great kindness.
