I was raised to make room for everyone. Keep the peace, absorb the bad mood, be the easy one. It took my Gen Z daughter to point out that I raised her to do the opposite, and she is right. Being kind was never supposed to mean disappearing. You are allowed to stop managing everyone else's comfort.

My daughter Faith brought me an article called "Bring Back the Hollywood As***le." The headline made her furious. Then she actually read it and decided the guy was so nothing he didn't even deserve her anger.
But it opened up something bigger for both of us. The piece argued the industry has gone soft and needs its "monsters" back, and here is what stuck with me:
when a system stops working for men, they get to rewrite it and call it progress. When it stops working for women, we get called difficult for asking. Same game, two very different scorecards.

My daughter Faith read something that made her furious, and then she handed it to me.
The whole argument of the piece was that things have gone soft and we "desperately need our monsters back." Faith reacted first, and then the two of us fell down a much bigger hole together. Who gets to show up a mess and still be taken seriously? Why are women held to an impossibly high standard while men are held to almost none? And why is it that when a system stops working for men, they get to rewrite it and call it progress, but when women try to change it, they get punished?
This is the part I love about doing XwhyZ with Faith. She names things I was trained to let slide, I have context she is still gathering, and somewhere in the middle is the actual conversation. This one made us laugh, made us think, and yes, it made us a little angry.
