Equity for rare diseases means more representation than you can imagine. ✨

Imagine a world where rare individuals are equally represented in the media, not only shining a light on these conditions to promote education, but also to encourage empathy and gain recognition from those in power to dedicate funding for research towards treatments and cures.
•
Living with PIK3CA-related overgrowth syndrome (PROS) subtype Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome, I grew up in a world where I needed to explain my condition and my symptoms to everyone, my friends, my teachers, even total strangers. I live with people thinking that my vascular birthmark is simply a cosmetic issue and not just the outward sign of a much more complex condition that will affect me my entire life.
•
As an advocate for the rare disease and vascular anomaly community, I want to make a difference in the lives of all individuals born with these conditions. Imagine a world where rare is beautiful. 💕

Today is international day of persons with disabilities.

Disabilities come in many forms. They can be visible or invisible; they can affect mobility, sensory, communication or cognitive functioning.

It is important to understand; however, that disabled does not mean incapable. It means that resources should be made available to those with disabilities that allow them to flourish in society.

Welcome to Maille’s Mission
My name is Maille McNicholas and I have Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS). When I was born in 2006, my parents did not understand my port wine birthmark and varicose veins. Thanks to the incredible team of physicians at the Vascular Anomalies Program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, I was properly diagnosed and have received excellent treatment and care.
Today I am a National Dance Champion and daring Aerialist. I love traveling with my Competition Dance Team and performing on the trapeze and silks. Even though I have to wear my compression stocking, the symptoms of pain and swelling in my leg never stop me.
I have been participating in Pageants for the past five years, and have made it my platform and mission to provide awareness about KTS and other vascular conditions, as well as promote acceptance of children like me with vascular birthmarks. I want all children to know that they can live their dreams!
