Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown is the move for a hot weekend - go in the late afternoon when the animals are active and the heat backs off. It's a manageable size (you can do the whole thing in 2-4 hours), incredibly clean, and the enclosures are beautiful.
Here's what you can do:
Hand-feed the giraffes (yes, really - $6 and worth it)
Pet the animals at the petting barn
Watch the monkeys move between their indoor/
outdoor cage
