For years billionaires and large media corporations have worked to buy out local papers and stations to downsize and close them, or more often to bleed their reporters dry until they have no other choice but to retire or move on.

Journalists hold elected officials accountable. They keep us informed. They educate us. And they work each and every day to protect the very principles this nation was founded on. Simply put, they have our backs. Now they need us to have theirs.

The journalists of the NE Ohio NewsGuild are fighting for fair working conditions that would include wage increases, equitable salaries between their news rooms, overtime pay, affordable healthcare options and leave policies, and protections from the implementation and continued use of AI in their newsrooms.

Portage Dems Chair issues statement on reported FBI raids on Ohio voting rights organization and weaponization of the DOJ:

The Department of Justice executed a raid on the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, an organization that exists solely to support voter rights and increase voter registration and participation across our state.

It has been reported that the Trump DOJ also sent agents to the homes of community leaders and civil rights activists as part of this raid, and in several instances failed to present a valid warrant.

While we will wait for additional details to emerge, it seems to be painfully clear that the DOJ is being weaponized against Democratic leaning organizations in an effort to sow doubt in the integrity of our elections.

We cannot allow that to happen.

Our elections are safe and secure, and overseen by phenomenal teams of dedicated individuals at Boards of Elections across the state. Every voter should have the right to participate in and register voters for those elections without fear of intimidation and retaliation.
