EDRs in modern vehicles are designed to withstand the tremendous forces in a crash and survive to tell us a bit about what happened... at least for most crashes. But sometimes the forces are so severe that the EDR itself is damaged and communication is not possible. The next step is a 'chip swap", transferring the small memory chip from the damaged EDR to an undamaged exemplar. Tedious work but the only way to get at the important data.

In Charlotte NC for a week long class on Heavy Vehicle Event Data Recorders (Hvedr). Most heavy trucks have an EDR that can record data in the event of a crash. As valuable as that data may be, the process of accessing that information is not easy or straightforward. It also requires some expensive software and connectivity cables.
As valuable as the training was, the contacts and friends I made in the industry is invaluable.
