Peji Sla Wakpa Okichize Tanka Prayer Run 🦅🏃🏽♀️📍
This year marks the 150th anniversary of Peji Sla Wakpa Okichize Tanka — The Big Fight at Greasy Grass River.
To honor this occasion, our youth will once again take to the road in prayer.
This journey is not simply about remembering a battle.
It is about remembering who we are.
One hundred and fifty years later, our story continues.
We remain.
Our story lives in our language. It lives in our ceremonies. It lives in our communities. And it lives in the footsteps of the next generation.
As these young runners travel the road, they will carry more than their own determination. They will carry prayers for our people, respect for those who came before us, and hope for those who will come after us. They will carry the teachings, values, and responsibilities that have sustained the Lakota people through generations.
In a time when many young people are searching for belonging, purpose, and direction, this run serves as a reminder that our roots remain strong. It is an opportunity for our youth to connect with their culture, strengthen their spirits, and walk a path guided by prayer, discipline, and community.
These runs are also part of a larger effort to create positive opportunities for our youth. They encourage healthy living, sobriety, physical wellness, leadership, and cultural connection. Through experiences like this, our young people learn that honoring our traditions is not only about remembering the past; it is about carrying those teachings into their everyday lives.
Every mile they run is a step toward becoming leaders for the generations that will follow. By choosing prayer, culture, and community, these youth are helping show that there is another path forward. One that is rooted in strength, purpose, and hope.

When you support this effort, you are doing more than helping fund a run.
You are investing in our youth.
You are helping carry forward our traditions.
You are helping ensure that the stories, prayers, and values of our people continue to live on through the next generation.
The future of our Nation is not waiting somewhere ahead of us.
It is already here.
It is running down the road with tired legs, determined hearts, and prayers in its hands.
Philámayaye for helping our youth carry our past, our present, and our future forward. ❤️🖤💛🤍

🙏 From the beginning, to the end, and every mile in between. 🙏
Over the last few days, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing something truly special. Young children, teenagers, adults, and elders came together for the Te’cha Tha’ta’han Wochekiya Glu’ha Iyanka, carrying prayers and messages from communities across the Reservation.
Watching these runners push forward mile after mile has been emotional and inspiring. Some of the youngest runners were out there giving everything they had, while older youth and adults stepped in alongside them, encouraging one another and sharing the responsibility of carrying these prayers forward.
There was dignity in every step, every handoff, every prayer shared along the way. This run was a beautiful reminder that our culture is alive, our people can stand connected, and our youth are continuing to carry our traditions into the future.
We are deeply thankful for every prayer entrusted to these runners and for every community that welcomed them along the road. It has been a true honor to witness the strength, commitment, and love that filled this journey.
Philámayaye to everyone who ran, supported, prayed, and stood beside them. Your footsteps carried more than miles. They carried the hopes, prayers, and spirit of our people 🪶 🦅 ❤️🩹

Today our youth, families, and community members came together for the start of the Te'cha Tha'ta'han Wočhekiya Glu'ha Iyanka (Youth Prayer Run Around the Rez). Under the beautiful South Dakota sky, we gathered in prayer and prepared our hearts and minds for the journey ahead. As the runners begin their path across the Pine Ridge Reservation, they carry prayers for our communities, our elders, our youth, and the generations yet to come.
The Prayer Run is more than a physical journey. It is an opportunity to come together in a good way, honor our ancestors, strengthen our spirits, and support one another through prayer and purpose. Seeing youth, elders, families, and community members standing side by side was a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from unity.
Thank you to everyone who joined us, offered prayers, helped organize, provided support, and encouraged our runners along the way. Your presence helped make the beginning of this journey meaningful and memorable.
Mitákuye Oyás’iŋ — We are all related. ❤️🖤💛🤍
