In research completed by Lesh, Post, and Behr back in 1987, it was demonstrated that there are 5 representations/models of mathematical concepts. Instruction should focus on strengthening the ability to move between and among these representations: real world context, manipulative models, pictures, written symbols, and oral language. I argue that technology is a 6th representation to contend with today.
